At First Presbyterian Church, we envision a world where everyone feels loved, valued, and accepted. We strive to create a community where people can come together to worship, learn, and grow in their faith.
We are a diverse and welcoming community of believers who come from all walks of life. Whether you are young or old, single or married, or have a different background, we invite you to join us in worship and fellowship.
At First Presbyterian Church, we believe in taking our faith beyond the walls of our church and into the world. We are involved in various local outreach programs, including the Clifton Food Bank and the mobile Bosque Country Food Pantry.
On January 20, 1861, First Presbyterian, Clifton, was organized. Originally called the North Bosque Presbyterian Church. Abraham Lincoln was about to be sworn into office, and the nation was in crisis. Rev. Levi Tenney served as founding pastor, and the church was organized not by the Norwegians or Germans for which Bosque County is known, but by five Irish, English, and Scottish immigrant families. Services were first held in "Old Town Clifton," two miles north of present-day Clifton at the confluence of Clear Branch and the Bosque River. The congregation worshipped in several locations, and with many other denominations, before moving to our present site on Highway 6 in 1904. First Presbyterian remains the oldest continuous church congregation in Bosque County.
In 2010, Dr. Terry York of Baylor University was commissioned to write a song for the 150thanniversary of the church. He was given a rough draft of the church history as it was still being written. The first verse appears above from the song, "Not Arrows Nor Floods.” It beautifully captured the church story and was set to the music of a beloved old hymn. Many in the congregation refer to it as "our church song." And, during worship service on January 19th, it was sung with conviction. That first verse incorporates the death of founding member Allen Anderson in a Comanche Indian raid, floods which washed away early houses of worship on the Bosque River, droughts, women of the church picking cotton to pay the pastor's salary, and old churches making way for new. Through ups and downs and membership as small as three, the church prevails and has remained a place of worship, comfort, and faith for many generations.
